Cottons Farm

GIS, Asset Management, 3D Visualisation

Every asset in a school geolocated, from boilers down to first aid kits, fed live from the spreadsheet the client already kept. A Matterport walkthrough sits in the same interface, with each asset located in both views off a single record.

Background

Cottons Farm is a VINCI Facilities managed school where asset information was tracked on a spreadsheet with no geolocation at all. Finding an asset meant knowing where it was already.

What I built

The Digital Engineering team geolocated all building assets, from windows and doors to first aid kits, smoke alarms and boilers, through a combination of ArcGIS and FME, with a live feed from the original spreadsheet platform into the new Esri-based system.

How it works

  • Assets symbolised by type, condition or certification renewal date
  • Each room mapped to the site floor plan with room data sheet information attached
  • Drone-captured aerial image as basemap
  • A Matterport 360 tour embedded into the same site, with every mapped asset also located within the tour and linked to maintenance manuals and certifications

Outcome

A live GIS asset register with an embedded immersive walkthrough in a single interface, both working from the same underlying data. Most facilities management platforms offer map-based or 3D views, rarely both from one source.

Delivered as a proof of concept, rated Level 3 Novel Application on the internal innovation scale, with two colleagues, covering FME automation, room and asset mapping, Matterport integration and end-user interface design. Facilities staff were involved in feedback sessions.

Where it goes next

Rollout to other managed sites, starting with schools.
